25 Days of Thanks- Day 7

Thankful- Pinterest

Please know up front that I am in no way, shape, or form a power-Pinterest user.  At best, I’m a power-Pinterest gawker.

Tonight I did something that I probably haven’t done since 2nd grade.

My mom turns to me and says, “Do you know how to make snowflakes?”

And instantly, flashes of not being able to color in the lines, trouble with keeping my mouth shut, and dodgeballs flying at my face come racing into my mind.

I give her a reassuring “sure” and frantically search through these flashing memories to remember how the darn things were made.  I remember there was folding involved.  Scissors.  Did I need Elmer’s Glue?  Where’s my ruler?

After a challenging first attempt, my mom and I figured out the basics of how they come together.

But then another flash hit me.  Pinterest.

Pinterest is a DIY (Design It Yourself) type person’s dream.  So, curious, I bring my mom into the Pinterest world.  Typed in “Paper Snowflakes”.  And almost in unison realized that paper snowflakes are not just a second grader’s project anymore.

There’s 3d versions.  There’s patterns you can print to make some amazing designs.  There’s different displays you can make with them.  My mom was astounded.  I looked at the paper snowflake I quickly cut out and thought, “We have a lot of work to do…”

But I’ve found some other cool reasons to use Pinterest including keeping track of some pictures of places I’d like to visit, ideas for a desperately needed tie rack, and random things around the internet that could be used for a smile.

Here’s my Pinterest page.

I’ve searched for a bunch of things on there that I haven’t pinned down and I think there’s a lot of potential for the service, especially for the education industry.

The problem with all this though is that I go in looking for one thing and three hours later I’ve found new recipes, cool quotes to share with others, and 50 different “Oh… That’s so cool… If I only had time…” moments.

If you’re looking for anything from a weekend project to interesting gift ideas, Pinterest can be a great resource.  Just don’t blame me when you realize that you should have been to bed five hours ago.

Thanks for reading…
